Instead of only spending a single day a week on ancient history, the kids (1st grade & pre-k) and I decided to do a full week unit study out of three chapters from Story of the World {Middle Kingdom of Egypt, New Kingdom of Egypt, and the Israelites Leave Egypt}. We also threw some old kingdom in there since we covered that last year, and the girls read Mummies in the Morning by Mary Pope Osborne.
The kids really had a good time making Egyptian (and Hyksos) jewelry with glue for extra sparkle. We read about how Egypt invaded Nubia, and did some copywork:
There was plenty of dramatic play ("tomb robbers", mummifying stuffed animals, etc..). We also read about Hatshepsut the female pharaoh (and made our own fake beards), built monuments out of blocks, colored Tutankhamun death masks (and later saw photographs of the artifacts found in his burial chamber), and more..
Our Egypt unit study was a lot of fun and really made an impact on the kids, as they included Egyptian themes in their own games, stories, and artwork all week long.
