Montessori Practical Life Snack: Banana Skewers

This Montessori-inspired snack takes no prep-time, and kids get great practice with fine-motor skills making it themselves.  Here are the steps..

Cutting:

The girls enjoyed using real (plastic) knives to cut their bananas:

Threading:

They were the most excited about placing the pieces on a wooden skewer (we used the skewers yesterday for a craft and they were begging to play with them, which is where I got this idea from):

Eating

Snacks that the kids make themselves are always the tastiest!

That's basically all there is to it!  In the Mommy-blogger world where we're always trying to outdo each other with creative kid activities (I'm guilty of that too!), it's nice to remember that sometimes the simplest tasks can be just as fun as the more involved projects.

  1. Thanks for this idea! My 3.5 year old is always interested in helping me actually MAKE snacks and meals, not just help with adding in ingredients. I have real metal knives made for kids (not serrated) that would be perfect for this, along with the skewers.
