Today's book of the day was
Five Creatures by Emily Jenkins. It's a fun book about a family with five creatures (a girl, her parents, and two cats) and all the different ways they can be put into groups. For our activity, the girls drew pictures of our family (eight creatures total) and we came up with different ways of classifying ourselves...
This is such a fun grouping/sorting/classification activity because the subjects are family members, which makes it much more fun for the kiddos.
At first I asked the girls questions (like "Who had fur?"). Then it was their turn to ask the questions and come up with different groupings. For example, in our family:
- 3 creatures walk on four legs, and 5 walk on two
- There are 5 adults, and 3 children
- 7 creatures like chicken and 1 does not (E)
- 2 creatures can read, 2 are learning, and 4 don't know how
- 5 creatures have dark hair, and 3 have light hair
- 4 creatures know how to use a toilet, and 4 do not
- etc.. etc... the girls came up will all sorts of silly categorization criteria
This was a super-fun activity for the kids and it's a nice bonus that they got to practice some mathematical reasoning skills as well.
Interesting way to try to use a book to get your children to learn. Those pics do make it look like fun and they did a marvelous job.
