Using Buttons to Make Decorative Bowls

Last week we took out our Sensory Button Tray and made decorative plates and bowls using buttons and Model Magic (this would work with Salt Dough or any air-dry clay as well).   Here's what we did ...

I let the kids roll balls out of their clay and then roll them out with a rolling pin.  We used a cookie cutter to get it into a nice round shape, which turned into a not-so-round shape after being prodded and pinched by little fingers.

Then the best part was picking out buttons and pressing them into the clay:

This was a lot of sensory fun for the girls, and I have to admit that I really enjoyed it as well.  We tried a couple different ideas, but bowls (formed by pinching the clay) with the buttons decorating the bottom turned out the cutest:

The buttons really add some fun and personality to the project.  I'm going to be using these little bowls to hold miscellaneous nick-knacks and next to my bed to hold jewelery.  These would make sweet Mother's Day gifts as well.

  1. Could you please tell me. Did you colour the clay first?
Thanks so much, my son will love this!
